IBM Wins $83 Million From Groupon in Internet Patent Fight

IBM Wins $83 Million From Groupon in Internet Patent Fight

A US jury on Friday awarded International Business Machines (IBM) $83 million (roughly Rs. 569 crores) in a patent dispute with e-commerce company Groupon.

A jury in Delaware said Groupon used IBM's patented e-commerce technology without authorisation following a two-week trial.
"IBM invests nearly $6 billion annually in research and development, producing innovations for society," IBM spokesman Douglas Shelton said in a statement. "We rely on our patents to protect our innovations. We are pleased by the jury's verdict."
"We continue to believe that we do not infringe on any valid IBM patents," Groupon spokesman Bill Roberts said in a statement. "To the extent these patents have any value at all - which we believe they do not - the value is far less than what the jury awarded."
The jury said Groupon's infringement was wilful, allowing IBM to ask a judge to award additional damages.
IBM had sought $167 million (roughly Rs. 1,146 crores) in damages, saying it developed widely licensed technology crucial to the development of the Internet. Two of the patents relate to Prodigy, IBM's late-1980s precursor to the Web.
Groupon argued that some of IBM's patents should not have been granted because they describe obvious ideas, and said the computing company's damages request was unreasonable.
Armonk, New York-based IBM has secured more US patents than any other company for the past 25 years.
The case was closely watched in the technology industry because it offered a glimpse into IBM's efforts to license its large patent portfolio to other companies.
An IBM licensing executive testified that Amazon, Facebook, Alphabet's Google, LinkedIn and Twitter have each paid IBM $20 million to $50 million (roughly Rs. 137 crores to Rs. 343 crores) as part of cross-licensing deals that gave them access to the patent portfolio.
In 2017, IBM generated about $1.2 billion (roughly Rs. 8,235 crores) in revenue from its licensing activities.
During the trial Groupon lawyer J. David Hadden portrayed IBM as using outdated patents to squeeze money out of other tech companies with threats of litigation.
IBM lawyer John Desmarais told jurors the company had no choice but to sue after Groupon refused to take responsibility for using IBM's foundational technology.
"The verdict is a vindication for IBM's licensing program," Desmarais said by phone.

Samsung Begins Mass Production of 10nm 16Gb LPDDR4X DRAM

Samsung Begins Mass Production of 10nm 16Gb LPDDR4X DRAM   With the Galaxy Note 9 unveil just around the corner, Samsung has now announced that it has begun the mass production of its 10-nanometer-class (1y-nm) second generation 16Gb LPDDR4X (Low Power, Double Data Rate, 4X) DRAM. With this LPDDR4X advancement, Samsung will be capable of providing high-capacity 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB LPDDR4X packages. These new DRAM memory chips claim to bring up to 10 percent power reduction, 20 percent thickness reduction, while maintaining the same data rate of 4,266 megabits per second (Mb/s). Now that it is being mass produced, Samsung may launch the 8GB LPDDR4X mobile DRAM package in the Galaxy Note 9, when it arrives on August 9 next month, or in the Samsung Galaxy S10 scheduled for next year. Samsung claims that this package has been created by combining four of the 10nm-class 16Gb LPDDR4X DRAM chips. This 8GB LPDDR4X mobile DRAM package can realise a data rate of 34.1GB per s...

Benefits of Coconut oil

Coconut oil attracted a bad reputation years ago because it was sold as a refined and hydrogenated oil. This type of processed oil contains trans-fat and raises our ‘unhealthy’ cholesterol levels while lowering our ‘healthy’ cholesterol. Fortunately, times have changed and we now know that unprocessed raw, organic, extra virgin coconut oil not only helps with healthy cholesterol levels but has an array of other benefits too. Here are the top ten health benefits of coconut oil according to our naturopaths. 1. Immune support: Nearly 50% of the fat in coconut oil is a type of fat that’s rarely found in nature. It’s called lauric acid, which has many health promoting properties. Your body converts this into monolaurin, which has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Because of this, there’s no better time than the present to start taking coconut oil now that winter is on the way. 2. Weight control: Believe it or not, coconut oil can be beneficial in w...

Oppo’s wireless charging method under development at R&D facilities

Oppo’s wireless charging method under development at R&D facilities   Chinese smartphone maker Oppo is working on its own wireless charging method. Last week, during a visit to Oppo’s factory and headquarters in Shenzhen, China, the company revealed its future plan for wireless charging. The Chinese player confirmed that their wireless charging technology is currently under development at the company’s research and development (R&D) facilities. Although Oppo did not reveal when can we expect the company’s wireless charging technology to be commercially available in the market, it said the availability of its wireless charging in the market depends on users’ demand and the company’s marketing strategy. Shedding light on technical specifications of wireless charging, Oppo said the maximum voltage to achieve the standard wireless charging speed is 7.5W, which is equivalent to 5V/1A chargers currently available in the market. Although Oppo acknowledged ...
